Effect of gold nanoparticles on the spectral luminescence properties of eu3+-doped phosphate glass / G. Y. Shakhgil’dyan, M. Z. Ziyatdinova, V. V. The spectral luminescence properties of Eu3+-doped potassium-aluminum-phosphate glass with thermally induced formation of gold nanoparticles in its interior were investigated. It is shown that the formation of gold clusters (pre-plasmonic particles) results in stronger luminescence of rare-earth ions while the formation of gold nanoparticles possessing a localized plasmon resonance results in weaker luminescence. Femtosecond direct laser writing in silicate glasses doped with silver and cadmium sulfide / M. P. Vetchinnikov, G. Y. Shakhgildyan, A. S. Lipatiev et al. // Journal of Physics: Conference Series. — 2019. — no. 1199. — P. 012028–1–012028–5. Femtosecond direct laser writing (DLW) in oxide glasses doped with photosensitive agents (noble metals and semiconductors) opens new routes for precise space-selective tuning of material properties and development of functional photonic devices including integrated waveguides, optical switches, and volume optical memory. In this study, we showed how DLW can be used for the spatially-selective formation of micron-sized luminescent domains in the bulk of Ag-doped and CdS-doped silicate glasses. Multiphoton ionization caused by DLW leads to local heating of glass in the focal point, which initiates the precipitation and growth of luminescent Ag nanoclusters and CdS quantum dots in the periphery of the domains. The luminescence intensity of the formed domains depends on the laser exposure parameters, such as pulse energy and number of pulses that can be used in the future for multilevel optical data recording. Laser writing of polarization-sensitive birefringence in sodium-borosilicate glass / S. V. Lotarev, A. S. Lipat’iev, S. S. It is demonstrated that femtosecond laser pulses can be used to form birefringent microregions in sodium borosilicate glass with the composition 68 SiO2, 27 B2O3, 4 Na2O, and 1 Al2O3 (mol.%); the birefringence is associated with the formation of nanogratings and its slow axis is oriented perpendicular to the polarization plane of the writing laser beam. The dependences of the phase shift of the light passing through these microregions on the number and energy of the laser pulses forming them are determined. It is shown by means of confocal RS spectroscopy that the content of sodium cations decreases in the formed microregions. [ DOI ]

We report on design and fabrication of Ni2+-doped glass-ceramics from a low-alkali optical glass in Li2O-Na2O-Ga2O3-SiO2-GeO2 system by melting technique and subsequent thermally controlled nano-crystallization. The analysis of differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy reveals, for the first time, the real possibility of optimizing the integrated intensity of Ni2+ near-infrared emission through controlled pre-treatments at temperatures of nanophase nucleation, with the enhancement up to a factor of four with respect to gallium germanosilicate glass-ceramics obtained without pre-treatments. Importantly, the effects on the light emission are shown to be related to the influence of pre-treatment on size and size distribution of the gallium oxide nanocrystals which result from subsequent crystallization at higher temperature. We report ultrafast laser inscription of nanogratings possessing form birefringence in binary sodium germanate glasses in a wide range of Na2O content from 3 to 22 mol.%. A minimal number of laser pulses required to induce noticeable form birefringence is shown to grow exponentially with Na2O content in glass. Atomic force microscopy showed similarity of their periodical structure and period value to those in the nanogratings formed in fused silica. A sharp pulse duration threshold below which laser pulses do not induce nanogratings in the studied glasses has been revealed. Formation of a nanograting in 22Na2O·78GeO2 at the studied conditions is accompanied by crystallization of a surrounding submicron layer and partial crystallization inside the nanograting with precipitation of Na2Ge4O9 crystals. Ultrafast-laser vitrification of laser-written crystalline tracks in oxide glasses / S. V. Lotarev, A. S. Lipatiev, T. O. We report a method of femtosecond laser-induced vitrification of crystalline tracks laser-written in glasses with different crystallization ability including lanthanum borogermanage, barium titanium silicate and lithium niobium silicate glasses. We have found that crystalline tracks consisting of nonlinear optical LaBGeO5 and BaTi2Si2O8 phases corresponding to glass-forming compositions could be readily amorphized by the femtosecond beam, whereas the laser-induced vitrification of a track consisting of LiNbO3 crystalline phase possessing a non-glass-forming composition is more complicated but also possible. The suggested technique provides reversibility of femtosecond laser-induced space-selective crystallization of glasses and thus extends the functionality of the direct laser writing of crystal-in-glass architectures that is important for the fabrication of novel integrated optical components and devices. Влияние наночастиц золота на спектрально-люминесцентные свойства фосфатного стекла, содержащего ионы eu3+ / Г. Ю. Шахгильдян, М. З. Зиятдинова, В. В. Исследованы спектрально-люминесцентные свойства калиевоалюмофосфатного стекла, содержащего ионы Eu3+, при термостимулированном формировании в его объеме наночастиц золота. Показано, что формирование кластеров золота (доплазмонных частиц) приводит к повышению интенсивности люминесценции редкоземельных ионов, в то время как образование наночастиц золота, обладающих локализованным плазмонным резонансом, ведет к снижению интенсивности люминесценции.
Влияние оксида сурьмы на особенности кристаллизации литиево-алюмосиликатных стекол / В. И. Савинков, Г. Ю. Шахгильдян, А. С. Наумов и др. // Стекло и керамика. — 2019. — № 10. — С. 30–34. Показано, что введение в состав литиево-алюмосиликатного стекла ситаллообразующего состава добавки оксида сурьмы позволяет подавить часто наблюдающийся эффект растрескивания стекла в ходе его кристаллизации при температурах более 700 oС. Установлено, что введение Sb2O3 не изменяет фазовый состав образующегося ситалла. Предложен сценарий внедрения атомов сурьмы в остаточную стеклофазу, описывающий наблюдаемый эффект.

Данный способ позволяет в десятки раз повысить производительность работ без ухудшения прочностных характеристик транспортных конструкционных изделий из стекла при одновременном уменьшении вредного экологического воздействия производства на окружающую среду.

Изучены особенности воздействия сфокусированных фемтосекундных лазерных импульсов на сурьмяно-силикатное стекло состава 25Sb2O3·75SiO2 % (молярное содержание) в тепловом и нетепловом режимах. Установлено, что в отличие от кварцевого стекла, щелочносиликатных и некоторых боросиликатных стекол в модифицированных лазером областях изученного стекла не возникает двулучепреломления формы, характерного для образования нанорешеток. При воздействии 10^6 импульсов с энергией более 100 нДж и частотой следования 10 и 200 кГц в модифицированных областях возникает слабое двулучепреломление, медленная ось которого параллельна плоскости поляризации записывающего лазерного пучка, сопровождающееся выпадением кристаллических фаз, по всей видимости, включающих кубическую модификацию Sb2O3.
Фемтосекундное лазерное модифицирование прозрачного литиево-алюмосиликатного ситалла и исходного стекла, содержащего сурьму / В. Н. Сигаев, А. С. Липатьев, С. C. Федотов и др. // Стекло и керамика. — 2019. — № 10. — С. 9–13. Изучены особенности воздействия пучка фемтосекундного лазера на литиево-алюмосиликатное стекло, содержащее сурьму, и полученный из него термообработкой ситалл с коэффициентом теплового расширения, близким к нулю в широкой области температур. Как в нетепловом, так и в тепловом режиме лазерного воздействия продемонстрировано локальное уменьшение показателя преломления в модифицированных лазерным пучком областях ситалла, в нетепловом режиме достигающее значения 0,002. Основной причиной уменьшения показателя преломления, по всей видимости, является частичная аморфизация кристаллической фазы β-эвкриптита.
3-bit writing of information in nanoporous glass by a single sub-microsecond burst of femtosecond pulses / S. S. Fedotov, A. G. Okhrimchuk, A. S. We have found that a single sub-microsecond burst of femtosecond laser pulses produces a sub-micrometer cavity possessing the homogeneous birefringence with slow-axis orientation perpendicular to polarization of the laser beam in high-silicate nanoporous glass. Retardance and the root mean square of slow-axis orientation are investigated in dependence on the energy and the number of pulses in the burst. A burst of just three pulses with 98 ns inter-pulse intervals has been shown to induce homogeneous birefringence, and a burst of four pulses has provided birefringence with retardance of 35 nm, which is sufficient for reliable readout of the information recorded with multilevel encoding in slow-axis orientation. A text file has been recorded and read out in an array of birefringent cavities, each carrying 3 bits of information. The sub-microsecond burst of femtosecond pulses paves the way for a multiple increase of the rate of digital information recording with multilevel encoding in glass. [ DOI ]

Direct femtosecond laser-induced formation of cds quantum dots inside silicate glass / M. P. Vetchinnikov, A. S. Lipatiev, G. Y. We report the one-step precipitation of CdS quantum dots in the volume of CdS-doped silicate glass under the focused femtosecond laser beam without additional heat treatment of glass. Femtosecond direct laser writing leads to the annular distribution of the precipitated CdS quantum dots in laser-written domain optical properties of which could be tuned by laser beam parameters. Increasing the laser pulse number to 103 significantly enhances luminescence intensity in the domains, while further increasing up to 106 pulses leads to luminescence quenching. A possible scenario for the formation and distribution of quantum dots is proposed. [ DOI ]
Early stages of crystallization of lanthanum-borogermanate glass by a femtosecond laser beam / A. S. Lipat’ev, S. V. Lotarev, T. O. Regions in the bulk of lanthanum borogermanate glass modified by a femtosecond laser beam were studied by means of optical microscopy and confocal Raman scattering (RS) spectroscopy. The obtained data show that, at the stages preceding the formation of an LaBGeO5 microcrystal, upon irradiation by a femtosecond beam in a certain interval of laser pulse energy germanium nanocrystals precipitate in the zone of local heating. The correlation between the conditions of laser irradiation leading to the appearance of germanium nanocrystals and the conditions ensuring with high probability the crystallization of phases of the low-temperature modification of lanthanum borate and stillwellite-like lanthanum borogermanate suggest that germanium nanocrystals can serve as nuclei for heterogeneous crystallization of LaBO3 and LaBGeO3. Femtosecond laser assisted local crystallization of barium-titanate-silicate glass / A. S. Lipat’ev, I. A. Moiseev, S. V. Local crystallization of barium titanate silicate glass under the action of femtosecond laser beam was studied. The effect of the scan rate of the laser beam and the energy of the laser pulses on the morphology of the channels containing crystals of fresnoite Ba2TiSi2O8 was determined. Polarization Raman scattering spectroscopy was used to determine the predominant orientation of fresnoite crystals with formed channels. The results open up prospects for developing and fabricating waveguide crystal structures with low optical losses for photonics and integrated optics. [ DOI ]
Growth of fresnoite single crystal tracks inside glass using femtosecond laser beam followed by heat treatment / A. S. Lipatiev, I. A. Moiseev, S. V. We have studied the space-selective microcrystallization of barium titanium silicate glass under the femtosecond laser beam. The glass composition (mol %) was 40BaO·20TiO2·40SiO2 corresponding to the composition of polar fresnoite phase known for its large second-order optical susceptibility. Optical and micro-Raman microscopy confirmed the laser-induced formation of the Ba2TiSi2O8 crystalline tracks and their morphology was investigated by transmission electron microscopy. The possibility of a 20-fold increase in laser scanning speed providing homogeneous crystal track growth using the laser beam with an elliptical cross-section as compared to the conventional Gaussian beam has been shown. It has been demonstrated for the first time that annealing of laser-written crystalline tracks leads to substantial improvement of the quality of tracks structure tending to that of the fresnoite single crystal, which can be an important step in the development of single crystal optical waveguide components for photonics. Light-driven nanoperiodical modulation of alkaline cation distribution inside sodium silicate glass / S. Lotarev, S. Fedotov, A. Chemical differentiation of atoms in the nanoscale by femtosecond laser treatment enabling the formation of periodical nanostuctures (nanogratings) is demonstrated for the first time in sodium silicate glass. We report periodical redistribution of Na+ cations in SiO2 matrix related to the formation of nanogratings in 15Na2O·85SiO2 glass. They are shown to be similar to nanogratings in silica glass but their inscription is a much longer process taking 105–107 laser pulses. SEM, TEM and EDXA analysis revealed substantial migration of Na+ from the laser-irradiated area. Na+ cations remaining in nanogratings are accumulated at the boundaries or inside the 20–30 nm thick nanoplanes whereas the chemical composition of regions between the nanoplanes approaches to pure SiO2 making a drastic chemical differentiation on a nanoscale. Thus, the opportunity of optically driven nanoperiodical modulation of alkaline cation distribution inside the glass changing its properties in the nanoscale has been shown. This cation redistribution is expected to stimulate the search for new approaches to the design of complex nanostructured architectures in a glassy matrix. [ DOI ]
Multilevel data writing in nanoporous glass by a few femtosecond laser pulses / A. S. Lipatiev, S. S. Fedotov, A. G. Okhrimchuk et al. // Applied optics. — 2018. — Vol. 57, no. 4. — P. 978–982. Multidimensional data recording inside nanoporous high-silica glass by a femtosecond laser beam has been investigated. It is shown that three femtosecond laser pulses at pulse repetition rates up to 1 MHz are sufficient for recording 3 bits of information inside nanoporous glass, which is an order of magnitude lower than the number of pulses required for data writing in silica glass and provides a corresponding gain in the data writing speed. Multilayer data recording and reading were demonstrated providing the storage density corresponding to the capacity of 25 GB in the optical compact disc form factor. An outstanding thermal stability of the proposed optical data storage is confirmed by the 24 h long heat treatment at 700oC, which could not damage the recorded data. [ DOI ]

We demonstrate the possibility of joint formation of fluorescent silver clusters and plasmonic silver nanoparticles spatially confined in micron-sized domains by the one-step femtosecond direct laser writing (DLW) without subsequent heat treatment in zinc phosphate glasses with different concentration of silver. We show that DLW in glass induces local micro-modification of optical properties resulted in the appearance of luminescence, absorption and form birefringence in domains. Variation of laser pulse energy allows controlling the micro-modification process and tuning of optical properties. We propose a possible mechanism for observed phenomena that includes local chemical redistribution of glass network modifiers during DLW process. We believe that ability to form complex 3D shapes of luminescent, plasmonic and birefringent structures embedded in dielectric transparent glass materials opens new routes for the design of nanophotonic devices and multidimensional optical memory. The displacements on the whispering gallery modes (WGM) wavelengths of the three emission bands (660 nm, 760 nm and 1200 nm) of Ho3+ doped yttrium aluminosilicate microspheres were analysed as a function of the temperature. The displacements have been studied in order to evaluate the viability of these microspheres as thermal sensors. A 532 nm continuous wave laser was used to excite and heat the microspheres using a confocal microscope setup. Average displacement rates of the WGM peaks with the laser power of 5.3, 6.2 and 9.7 p.m./mW were found for the emission bands centred at 660 nm, 760 nm and 1200 nm, respectively. Temperature uncertainties of 0.6 K for the band centred at 660 nm, 0.5 K for the 760 nm band and 0.3 K for the 1200 nm band have been obtained. It is interesting to note that the maximum resolution corresponds to the band centred at 1200 nm that is especially interesting because it is inside the second biological window, which has medical applications. Методами оптической микроскопии и конфокальной спектроскопии комбинационного рассеяния (КР) исследованы модифицированные фемтосекундным лазерным пучком области в объеме лантан-оборогерманатного стекла. Полученные данные показывают, что на стадиях, предшествующих формированию микрокристалла LaBGeO5, при воздействии фемтосекудным пучком в определенном интервале энергии лазерных импульсов в зоне локального нагрева выделяются нанокристаллы германия. Корреляция между условиями лазерного воздействия, приводящими к появлению нанокристаллов германия и условиями, с высокой вероятностью обеспечивающими кристаллизацию фаз низкотемпературной модификации бората лантана и стилвеллитоподобного борогерманата лантана, позволяют предположить, что нанокристаллы германия могут служить зародышами для гетерогенной кристаллизации LaBO3 и LaBGeO5.

Методами оптической микроскопии, спектроскопии комбинационного рассеяния света и просвечивающей электронной микроскопии была детально изучена структура полученных под действием фемтосекундных лазерных импульсов кристаллических треков в бариевотитаносиликатном стекле состава 40BaO•20TiO2•40SiO2 (мол.). Продемонстрировано наличие кристаллических блоков фресноита Ba2TiSi2O8 в структуре сформированных треков. Установлено, что применение призматического телескопа уменьшает дефектность структуры кристаллических треков. Получение качественных кристаллических треков, состоящих из фазы фресноита, обладающей кубической оптической восприимчивостью, интересно для разработки активных волноводов и применения для нужд интегральной оптики.

В объеме стекла состава 23Na2O·77SiO2 фемтосекундным лазерным пучком записаны треки, образованные двулучепреломляющими нанорешетками. Продемонстрировано, что записанные нанорешетки обладают пониженной стойкостью к воздействию 0,05 мас. % раствора HF, но селективность их травления существенно ниже, чем в кварцевом стекле. При определенных параметрах записывающего лазерного пучка скорость травления нанорешеток, ориентированных вдоль линии, оказывается в 1,2-1,4 раза выше, чем для нанорешеток с поперечной ориентацией.

Формирование полупроводниковых наночастиц в объеме оксидных стекол под действием фемтосекундного лазерного излучения является актуальным направлением фотоники. В работе исследовано влияние концентрации CdS в диапазоне 1-4 масс.% и условий термообработки при температурах от 550 до 750ºС на спектрально-люминесцентные свойства силикатных стекол системы K2O-ZnO-B2O3-SiO2. Методом спектроскопии комбинационного рассеяния показано, что для выбранных условий термообработки полупроводниковые наночастицы образуются только для стекол с наибольшей концентрацией CdS.

Second harmonic generation produced by near-infrared femtosecond laser pulses was demonstrated in the waveguiding mode for the laser written crystalline track. It is demonstrated that a femtosecond laser beam forms in alkali-silicon glass with different Na2O concentration microregions that possess birefringence associated with the formation of nanolattices. The phase shift of such regions is determined as a function of the number and energy of the laser pulses. The minimum number of pulses required for birefringence to appear increases with increasing Na2O concentration. At 107 pulses the phase shift reaches approximately the same maximum value for all glass compositions, which indicates that the diffusion of alkali ions in the process of formation of nanolattices plays a leading role in such glasses. Chromium-doped bismuth–germanium oxide glasses with molar composition x Bi2O3–(100 - x) GeO2– y Cr2O3 (x = 40, 50; y = 0, 0.01) were synthesized by melt-quenching technique and their physical properties were investigated. The glasses were transformed to glass ceramics by heat-treatment. The femtosecond laser-induced modification of glasses showed no glass devitrification up to the pulse energy of 400 nJ but the refractive index for all studied glasses increased on the order of 10-3. Structural and optical properties of the glasses and glass–ceramics were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy, and optical spectroscopy.materials can be successfully produced both by heattreatment in furnace and by a laser irradiation and in this way treated glasses have many potential industrial applications such as optical memory devices, electro-optical frequency converters [4–8]. In the present research, bismuth–germanium oxide glasses doped with chromium were synthesized and treated by conventional heat-treatment and also by a focused femtosecond laser beam. The alignment of the glass elements from radiation-resistant optical glass k-208 for thermal control coatings of spacecraft / P. A. Vyatlev, D. V. Sergeev, V. N. Optical coatings, i.e. elements of temperature controlling coatings, based on ultrathin elements of optical radiation-resistant glass K-208 with thickness of about 150 μm, are successfully used as passive means of temperature controlling tools in space engineering. The paper considers the process of fabrication of glass elements for temperature controlling coatings, which includes the following stages: drawing of glass ribbon from a brick of glass heated to a temperature of high plastic consistency through a steel draw-hole; dimensional cutting of the glass ribbon that is done by means of a diamond scriber; process of thermal plastic flattening of glass elements done in a furnace by heating to a temperature of plastic consistency under load. The process of drawing from a highly plastic brick of large sizes leads to difficulties in providing the flatness of the ribbon drawn. The glass ribbon has a convex shape. In order to achieve a required deviation from the flatness, the technique of warm plastic deformation of the glass elements under load is used. The process of flattening of convex glass elements is considered, temperature regimes and holding time, which allow one to achieve minimum deviations from the flatness (below 10 μm) are chosen. Measurements of flatness deviations of glass elements before and after flattening are carried out by a profile recorder 252 “Caliber”. The results of the measurements prove the efficiency of the flattening technique chosen. The flattening process makes it possible to fabricate thin elements of K-208 glass with minimum flatness deviations that allows for their application in the units of temperature controlling coatings in the temperature controlling systems of space vehicles. © 2017, Institute for Metals Superplasticity Problems of Russian Academy of Sciences. Phosphate glass with different Yb3+ concentrations was synthesized and studied. The composition of the glass made it possible to obtain optically uniform glass in small-volume crucibles. The basic spectral characteristics of the obtained glasses were determined and it was shown that the proposed matrix gives a high quantum yield of luminescence in a wide range of Yb3+ concentrations. The influence of the content of OH groups on the decay time of the Yb3+ luminescence was investigated. In view of its good cooking and casting properties this glass holds promise for use in the active media for near-IR solid-state and fiber lasers. © 2017 Springer Science+Business Media New York. Выравнивание стеклянных элементов из оптического радиационно-стойкого стекла К-208 для терморегулирующих покрытий космических аппаратов / П. А. Вятлев, Д. В. Сергеев, В. К. В настоящее время в космической технике в качестве пассивных средств для систем обеспечения теплового режима успешно применяются оптические покрытия (элементы терморегулирующих покрытий) на основе ультратонких (толщиной порядка 150 мкм) элементов из оптического радиационно-стойкого стекла К208. В статье рассматривается процесс изготовления стеклянных элементов для терморегулирующих покрытий, включающий в себя следующие стадии: - вытягивание стеклоленты блока нагретого до температуры высоко пластичного состояния стекла через стальную фильеру; - размерную резку стеклоленты, осуществляемую при помощи скрайбирующего алмазного инструмента; - процесс теплового пластического выравнивания стеклянных элементов, осуществляемый в печи при нагреве до температуры пластичности стекла под нагрузкой. Процесс вытяжки из высоко пластичного блока большой размерности приводит возникновению трудностей по обеспечению плоскостности вытягиваемой стеклоленты. Форма стеклоленты имеет выпуклую форму. Для обеспечения требуемого отклонения от плоскостности применяется технология тепловой пластической деформации под нагрузкой стеклянных элементов. Рассмотрен процесс выравнивания выпуклых стеклянных элементов, выбраны температурные режимы и время выдержки, позволяющие получать минимальное отклонение от плоскостности (до 10 мкм). Проведены измерения отклонения от плоскостности стеклянных элементов до и после процесса выравнивания при помощи профилометра-профилографа 252 Калибр. Результаты полученных измерений подтверждают эффективность выбранной технологии выравнивания. Процесс выравнивания позволяет получить тонкие элементы из стекла К-208 с минимальным отклонением от плоскостности, что позволяет их применять в элементах терморегулирующих покрытий систем терморегулирования космических аппаратов.
ИССЛЕДОВАНИЕ ВЛИЯНИЯ al2o3 НА ТЕХНОЛОГИЧЕСКИЕ СВОЙСТВА ЛЕГКОПЛАВКИХ СТЕКОЛ СИСТЕМЫ li2o-sno-p2o5. УСПЕХИ В ХИМИИ И ХИМИЧЕСКОЙ ТЕХНОЛОГИИ / Э. М. Зинина, Д. К. Чакветадзе, Ю. А. Спиридонов, В. Н. Сигаев // Успехи в химии и химической технологии. — 2017. — Т. 31, № 1. — С. 31–33. Изучено влияние оксида алюминия на свойства стекол системы Li2O- SnO- P2O5 с добавками Na2O, K2O, SrO. Подобные стекла перспективны при создании легкоплавких припоечных композиций, применяемых в различных областях науки и техники. В зависимости от содержания вводимой добавки получены значения температурных коэффициентов линейного расширения (ТКЛР) (129 - 146)·10-7 К-1, температур стеклования (Tg) - (251-310) оС и температур начала деформации (Тн.д.) - (280-337) оС. Растекаемость полученных стекол при температуре 440оС составила (169-365)%, потери массы при кипячении - (0,14-1,67)%. Полученные данные позволяют рекомендовать составы этих стекол в качестве замены классическим свинцовоборатным стеклам, широко использующимся в качестве основы при создании припоечных композиций.

Методом поляризационной спектроскопии комбинационного рассеяния установлена преимущественная ориентация кристаллов фресноита в сформированных каналах. Полученные результаты открывают перспективы разработки и изготовления волноводных кристаллических структур с пониженными оптическими потерями для фотоники и интегральной оптики.

С помощью поляризационной спектроскопии комбинационного рассеяния установлена ориентация кристаллов фресноита в полученных каналах. Результаты работы будут применены для разработки методики формирования волноводных структур с минимизированными оптическими потерями.
Локальное формирование двулучепреломляющих структур в объеме щелочно-силикатных стекол пучком фемтосекундного лазера / С. С. Федотов, А. С. Липатьев, С. В. Лотарев, В. Н. Продемонстрировано формирование фемтосекундным лазерным пучком микрообластей в щелочно-силикатных стеклах с различной концентрацией Na2O, обладающих двулучепреломлением, связанным с образованием нанорешеток. Установлены зависимости фазового сдвига сформированных областей от количества и энергии лазерных импульсов. Увеличение концентрации Na2O приводит к увеличению минимального количества импульсов, требуемого для возникновения двулучепреломления, но в то же время при воздействии 107 импульсов для стекол всех составов фазовый сдвиг достигает примерно одинакового максимального значения, что говорит о ведущей роли диффузии щелочных ионов в процессе образования нанорешеток в таких стеклах.
МИКРОСТРУКТУРА КРИСТАЛЛИЧЕСКИХ КАНАЛОВ, СФОРМИРОВАННЫХ В ЛАНТАНОБОРОГЕРМАНАТНОМ СТЕКЛЕ ФЕМТОСЕКУНДНЫМ ЛАЗЕРНЫМ ПУЧКОМ / А. С. Липатьев, С. В. Лотарев, Т. О. Методами атомно-силовой микроскопии, сканирующей и просвечивающей электронной микроскопии исследована структура кристаллических каналов, сформированных в объеме лантаноборогерманатного стекла под действием фемтосекундного лазерного пучка. Подтверждена ориентированность полярной оси кристаллов вдоль направления сканирования лазерным пучком и обнаружены границы раздела кристаллических зерен стилвеллитоподобной фазы LaBGeO5. Дальнейшие исследования, направленные на оптимизацию условий лазерной кристаллизации стекла, позволят повысить качество кристаллической структуры каналов и раскрыть потенциала их применений в активных устройствах фотоники и интегральной оптики.

В бинарных щелочносиликатных стеклах номинального состава 23R2O·77SiO2 с различными типами щелочного катиона (R=Li, Na, K) под действием серии фемтосекундных лазерных импульсов продемонстрировано возникновение микрообластей с поляризационно-зависимым двулучепреломлением, связанное с образованием нанорешеток. Показано, что такое двулучепреломление в данных стеклах возникает под действием 107-3·107 импульсов с энергией в диапазоне 110-190 нДж. Проведен анализ влияния щелочного катиона на величину фазового сдвига в двулучепреломляющих областях.

Полученные результаты демонстрируют перспективность исследований, связанных с изучением возможности лазерного модифицирования данных стекол, с целью их потенциальной реализации в нанофотонике и хранении информации.

However, the strength of retardance asymptotically approaches the value typically measured in pure silica glass, which is attractive for practical applications. A similar intensity threshold for nanograting formation of about 1 TW/cm2 is observed for all glasses studied. Laser glass was synthesized using a phosphate base with different Nd3+ concentrations, whose composition ensures high glassmaking properties and the possibility of obtaining in small crucibles optically uniform glass. The basic spectral-luminescence characteristics of the obtained glasses are determined and it is shown that this matrix ensures long duration of luminescence and high quantum yield in a wider range of Nd3+ concentrations. Taking account of the good melting and pouring properties this matrix composition is helpful for development work on new laser materials with a modified luminescence band owing to activation by different rare-earth elements and modification of the matrix by highly polarizable cations. The following parameters are obtained: Omega(2) = 5.45 x 10 (-20), Omega(4) = 2.82 x 10 (-20), Omega(6) = 3.76 x 10 (-20) cm(2) for X1 and Omega(2) = 4.99 x 10 (-20), Omega(4) = 2.18 x 10 (-20), Omega(6) = 3.51 x 10 (-20) cm(2) for X2. Выбраны составы стекол, обладающие высоким коэффициентом преломления nD=1,72÷1,79 для получения светоотражающих стеклянных микрошариков. Содержание компонентов в области стеклообразования варьируются в пределах: SiO2 (38 – 48 мол. %), Al2O3 (18 – 21 мол. %), B2O3 (15 – 45 мол. %) и при фиксированном содержании La2O3 (27 мол. %) позволяют получать стекла без признаков кристаллизации традиционным методом. Результаты исследования могут быть использованы также для разработки оптических стекол, не содержащих оксида свинца.
Локальное наноструктурирование натриевосиликатных стекол фемтосекундным лазерным пучком / С. С. Федотов, А. С. Липатьев, С. В. Под действием фемтосекундных лазерных импульсов были сформированы микрообласти с поляризационно-зависимым двулучепреломением в объеме щелочносиликатных стекол. С помощью количественного микроанализа двулучепреломления и сканирующей электронной микроскопии продемонстрировано образование периодических наноструктур (так называемых нанорешеток). Установлены зависимости фазового сдвига данных структур от количества импульсов и содержания щелочных оксидов в стекле. С помощью локального элементного анализа выявлена частичная миграция щелочных металлов за пределы области модифицирования.

В результате работы определена область составов, в которой возможно получение прозрачных ситаллов с требуемыми физико-химическими характеристиками (бессвильность: категория 1 (ГОСТ 3521), пузырность: не более 10 пузырей (50-200 мкм)/кг, пузыри больше 200 мкм отсутсвуют, твердость материала: 7.0-7.5 по Моосу. Опытным путем установлено оптимальное соотношение оксидов для расчета и подготовки шихты: содержание MgO – 7.9÷8.4 масс.%, Na2O – 1.025 ± 0,01 масс.%, TiO2– 6.97± 0,07 масс.%, ZrO2 – 2,15÷3.15± 0,03 масс.%, SiO2 от 41,5 до 42,5 масс.%, Al2O3 – 14,77± 0,07 масс.%, As2O3 – 0,9 ± 0,1 масс.%, так же установлены температурные интервалы зародышеобразования и роста кристаллов с образованием кристаллической фазы – сапфирин.

В работе представлены результаты исследования цинкфосфатных стекол с различным содержанием серебра. Выявлены зависимости структурных особенностей, теплофизических и спектрально-люминесцентных свойств от концентрации серебра. Установлено, что повышение содержания серебра в стекле до 8 мол.% не приводит к снижению интенсивности люминесценции стекол. Полученные результаты демонстрируют перспективность исследований таких стекол с целью их дальнейшего объемного и поверхностного лазерного модифицирования для потенциальных применений в нанофотонике и хранении информации.

Local surface crystallization of LBG glass by a laser beam with 2 – 15 μm crystals precipitated by means of laser heating of the sample at temperature somewhat below tg is demonstrated for the first time. X-ray phase analysis and confocal RS spectroscopy show that the polar phase LiBGeO4 is the only phase formed as a result of crystallization. Femtosecond lasers have become a powerful tool for 3D space-selective crystallization of glasses. A laser-induced cumulative heating effect required for crystal growth is usually considered to take place only at pulse repetition rate over 100 or 200 kHz and 200 kHz is known as the lowest repetition rate at which femtosecond laser-induced crystallization has been reported so far. We for the first time demonstrate precipitation of LaBGeO5 crystals in lanthanum borogermanate glass using a femtosecond laser emitting 1030 nm, 300 fs, 110 μJ pulses with adjustable repetition rate below 100 kHz. For the applied laser, minimal repetition rate enabling nucleation of ferroelectric LaBGeO5 crystals inside the glass was shown to be 9 kHz at maximal pulse energy of 110 μJ and growth of a crystalline line from the formed seed crystal was obtained starting from 8 kHz though smooth homogeneous oriented line which might be regarded as quasi-single-crystalline could be grown at 25 kHz or higher and corresponding pulse energy of 18 μJ. Thus, the pulse repetition rate sufficient for a cumulative heating effect and a stable crystal growth was reduced by an order of magnitude as compared to earlier publications due to relatively high pulse energy. Possibility and efficiency of cumulative heating and crystal growth and average time required for forming the seed crystal have been studied for various combinations of the pulse energy and the repetition rate. Obtained crystalline features have been studied by micro-Raman spectroscopy and Raman mapping which confirmed growth of stillwellite-like LaBGeO5 phase and orientation of its polar axis along the direction of the crystalline line. © 2015 SPIE. Light emission of nanocrystals (NCs) can depend not only on NC size but also - and even more importantly in wide-band-gap NCs - on the occurrence of optically active sites, such as donor-acceptor pairs (DAPs). Here, we demonstrate that controlling the thermo-chemical conditions of NC nucleation when NCs are forming in a solid host - an approach often used for driving NC size dispersion - can be an innovative strategy for tailoring DAP population. Our data show that light emission from DAP recombination and decay in defect sites can be controlled in gamma-Ga2O3 NCs in alkali-germanosilicate glass - a prototypal oxide-in-oxide nanostructured system - by oxygen and gallium vacancy formation during nucleation. Time-resolved UV-excited photoluminescence, combined with differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy, reveal how nucleation pretreatment determines, besides NC size and concentration, also the DAP number via promotion of acceptor formation or their passivation during interaction with the host. The results envisage the possibility of nucleation-based design of light-emitting NCs in a wide range of oxide systems. [ DOI ]

Crystalline gallium oxide is known to possess UV-excited blue photoluminescence together with one of the widest band gaps among transparent conducting oxides, with a transmittance range extending from the visible to the near-UV range, thus making it a promising material for efficient solar-blind UV-to-visible converters. In the present paper, we report for the first time laser-induced space-selective precipitation of gamma-Ga2O3 nanosized crystals in alkali gallium germanosilicate glass using a sum frequency beam (271 nm) of a copper vapor laser. At the glass surface, the laser writing process generates transparent nanostructured channels which emit broadband blue photoluminescence (centered at about 460 nm) under UV exposure, with excitation efficiency peaked at about 260 nm. Only much weaker blue photoluminescence can instead be observed in the starting non-irradiated glass from the precursor stage of the nanocrystallization. Spectral properties of light emission in the nanocrystallized regions are similar to those of earlier studied bulk nanostructured material produced from the same composition by heat treatment. Морфология модифицированной области изучена с помощью поляризационной микроскопии. Наблюдалась абляция, изменение показателя преломления и выпадение кристаллов, которые по данным спектров КР представляют собой сегнетоэлектрический ниобат лития LiNbO3.

Показано, что минимальная частота следования импульсов, при которой возможен рост кристаллов в лантаноборогерманатном стекле, уменьшается с увеличением энергии импульса.
Broadband infrared light-emitting patterns in optical glass by laser-induced nanostructuring of nio-doped alkali-gallium germanosilicates / S. V. Lotarev, A. S. Lipatiev, N. V. In this Letter, we show functionalization of NiO-doped 7.5Li2O · 2.5Na2O · 20Ga2O2 · 35SiO2 · 35GeO2 glass by space-selective nanocrystallization via exposure to the focused beam of a pulsed copper vapor laser (510.6 and 578.2 nm) at temperature close to the glass transition point (570oC). Irradiated areas drastically change their color, caused by electronic transitions of Ni2+ dopant ions, without any alteration of the optical quality. Importantly, irradiated regions acquire broadband infrared luminescence (centered at about 1400 nm and possessing 400 nm effective bandwidth) typical of Ni2+ ions in crystalline environment, and by positive change of refractive index (more than 10-3). Spectroscopic and diffractometric data of the irradiated regions indeed resemble those previously observed in thermally nanocrystallized glass, with Ni2+ ions embedded in γ-Ga2O3 nanocrystals. The results demonstrate the possibility of laser writing nanocrystallized multifunction patterns in germanosilicate glasses for the fabrication of active integrated devices. © 2013 Optical Society of America. A new approach to obtaining a functional glass ceramic based on potassium niobate from an amorphous precursor, obtained by rapid cooling of the melt containing small additions of the glass former SiO2, is examined. The results indicate that there is promise in the glass ceramic technology, which ensures the formation of cubic KNbO3 crystals of almost ideal habitus whose flat grains surrounded by thin, composition-regulated glass interlayers can stick to one another. The ceramic KNbO3 obtained by the glass ceramic technology differs beneficially from its conventional analog by low tanä in the entire range of existence of the ferroelectric phase (below 410 C), which determines its advantage for a host of applications. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media New York. A crystallization study of lithium niobium silicate glass with the molar composition 35Li2O.25Nb2O5.40SiO2 is reported using in situ techniques (x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and environmental electron microscopy) at high temperatures. Those techniques reveal that the surface crystallization begins at Tg with c-axis crystallites oriented perpendicular to the surface. Precipitation of nuclei, followed by growth and coalescence processes, induce the formation of particles and spherulites 0-5-4 μm diameter in size. A strong difference between surface and bulk crystallization has been observed with bulk crystallization yielding to 30 [im diameter size spherulites. Those original spherulite shapes could be the origin of the macroscopic bulk second harmonic generation (SHG) signal.

It is shown that a copper vapor laser can be used effectively for local crystallization of glasses with precipitation of active phases on a surface or in the interior volume of glass depending on its composition. Aprocedure is proposed for using a laser beam to form nanostructural waveguides with broadband near-IR luminescence peaking at 1300 - 1450 nm in glass with composition (mol.%) 7.5 Li2O, 2.5 Na2O, 20 Ga2O3, 35 GeO3 and 35 SiO2 doped with 0.1 - 0.5% NiO. A mechanism of self-limited laser heating, impeding subsequent growth of the nanocrystals formed, is demonstrated. Herein we describe how UV excitation of localized electronic states in phosphate glasses can activate structural rearrangements that influence the kinetics of Au nanoparticle (NP) thermal growth in Au-doped glass. The results suggest a novel strategy to address the problem of controlling nano-assembly processes of metal NP patterns in fully inorganic and chemically stable hard materials, such as laser-quality glasses. We show that the mechanism is promoted by opening and subsequent cross-linkage of phosphate chains under UV excitation of non-bridging groups in the amorphous network of the glass, with a consequent modification of Au diffusion and metal NP growth. Importantly, the micro-Raman mapping of the UV-induced modifications demonstrates that the process is restricted within the beam waist region of the focused UV laser beam. This fact is consistent with the need for more than one excitation event, close in time and in space, in order to promote structural cross-linkage and Au diffusion confinement. The stability of the photo-induced modifications makes it possible to design new metal patterning approaches for the fabrication of three-dimensional metal structures in laser-quality materials for high-power nonlinear applications. © 2013 IOP Publishing Ltd. Structure of low-silica glasses in the k2o-nb2o5-sio2 system / P. D. Sarkisov, A. Paleari, V. N. Sigaev et al. // Theoretical Foundations of Chemical Engineering. — 2013. — Vol. 47, no. 1. — P. 1–9. The nanostructure and nonlinear optical properties of high-niobium glasses in the (1 - x)KNbO3-xSiO(2) system with an SiO2 content x = 0.05-0.35 have been studied by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), electron microscopy (EM), and second-optical-harmonic generation (SHG). Vitreous samples are manufactured by the methods of fast melt cooling (pressing with metal plates and quenching between rotating rolls). Glasses with x < 0.12 have been established to form a micro-inhomogeneous structure in the form of silica-enriched regions at the cooling rates used. According to SANS data, quenched glasses with x > 0.2 are homogeneous, but form a silica-enriched nanostructure after thermal treatments. At temperatures below similar to T (g) + 50A degrees C, silica-enriched regions manifest a very slight tendency to grow, whereas, according to SANS and X-ray diffraction data, their chemical composition is observed to shift appreciably towards SiO2 with thermal treatment. The obtained data on an inhomogeneous structure allows us to clarify the complicated character of the previously revealed dependence T (g) (x). Nano-inhomogeneous transparent samples produce a weak SHG signal, which indicates the quasi-periodic modulation of the chemical composition and, correspondingly, polarizability, in the volume of glass. The nonlinear optical phase KNbO3 precipitates at later stages of crystallization, when a glass loses its transparency. In this case, the SHG signal is amplified by several orders of magnitude. C помощью лазера на парах меди впервые осуществлена локальная кристаллизация литиевоборогерманатного стекла состава 25Li2O∙25B2O3∙50GeO2, допированного 0,5 мол.% NiO. В зависимости от режима облучения получены локальные кристаллические структуры или аморфные области с измененным показателем преломления. Анализ структуры выделившихся кристаллов показал их соответствие сегнетоэлектрику LiBGeO4. Полученные результаты представляют интерес для интегральной оптики и разработки гибридных стеклокристаллических структур с нелинейно-оптическими свойствами.

Microfluorescence analysis of nanostructuring inhomogeneity in optical fibers with embedded gallium oxide nanocrystals / V. M. Mashinsky, N. M. Karatun, V. A. A spectroscopic protocol is proposed to implement confocal microfluorescence imaging to the analysis of microinhomogeneity in the nanocrystallization of the core of fibers belonging to a new kind of broadband fiber amplifier based on glass with embedded nanocrystals. Nanocrystallization, crucial for achieving an adequate light emission efficiency of transition metal ions in these materials, has to be as homogeneous as possible in the fiber to assure optical amplification. This requirement calls for a sensitive method for monitoring nanostructuring in oxide glasses. Here we show that mapping microfluorescence excited at 633 nm by a He-Ne laser may give a useful tool in this regard, thanks to quasi-resonant excitation of coordination defects typical of germanosilicate materials, such as nonbridging oxygens and charged Ge-O-Ge sites, whose fluorescence are shown to undergo spectral modifications when nanocrystals form into the glass. The method has been positively checked on prototypes of optical fibers-preventively characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy-fabricated from preforms of Ni-doped Li2O-Na2O-Sb2O3-Ga2O3-GeO2-SiO2 glass in silica cladding and subjected to heat treatment to activate gallium oxide nanocrystal growth. The method indeed enables not only the mapping of the crystallization degree but also the identification of drawing-induced defects in the fiber cladding. [ DOI ]

Depending on the heat treatments, both surface and/or bulk crystallizations of the LiNbO3 crystalline phase were observed. X-ray diffraction together with second harmonic generation (SHG) measurements have revealed a net preferred orientation of the ferroelectric crystallites at the surface which is quite different in the bulk. Local crystallization of glasses induced by laser irradiation is an efficient technique of fabricating regular structures (arrays of dots, lines, gratings) which can be used as waveguides and other elements in the novel glass-based devices of integrated optics and photonics. One of the most important cases is local laser-induced crystallization of nonlinear optical crystals which can form a base for integrated active elements for optical frequency conversion or electrooptical modulation. We report a comparative study on laser-induced crystallization of lanthanum borogermanate glasses with different additives using different types of lasers. A stillwellite-like crystalline LaBGeO5 phase possessing ferroelectric and nonlinear optical properties or its solid solutions with partial substitution of La by Nd or Sm depending on the additive are shown to precipitate as well-formed crystals a few microns in size near the glass surface under radiation of the continuous wave Nd:YAG laser (1064 nm), the continuous wave copper vapor laser (510,6 nm and 578,2 nm). To enhance optical absorption of the basic glass we added Sm 2O3 oxide for irradiation at 1064 nm and Nd 2O3 for irradiation at 510,6 nm and 578,2 nm whereas pure glass was subjected to KrF laser irradiation due to high native absorption at 248 nm. A copper vapor laser which almost has not been applied to this technique before is shown to be an effective tool for laser-induced crystallization providing short times of crystal growth and high speed of laser writing. © 2011 SPIE. Nano-heterogeneous structure of (1-x)knbo3-xsio(2) glasses in the low glass-forming oxide content range 0.05 <= x <= 0.3 / V. N. Sigaev, S. V. Lotarev, V. S. Glasses with a high content of niobium oxide are of significant interest for electro-optics and nonlinear optics. In the present paper we report the results of the investigation of the submicroscopic structure and nonlinear optical properties of (1-x)KNbO3-xSiO(2) (KNS) glasses (x = 0.05-0.30) by XRD. SANS, electron microscopy and second harmonic generation (SHG) technique. Vitreous samples were fabricated by rapid melt cooling, via pressing the melt by steel plates, quenching between rotating metal rolls Or splat cooling in air or nitrogen flow. Glasses with x<0.15 are shown to possess a micro-inhomogeneous structure with regions enriched by SiO2. On the contrary, as-quenched glasses with x>0.15 arc found by SANS to be homogeneous, but form nanostructures enriched by SiO2 after heat-treatment. At temperatures below similar to(T-g + 50 degrees C), SiO2-enriched regions grow slightly, whereas their chemical composition shifts considerably closer to SiO2. The data on the nano-inhomogeneous structure enables clarifying the complicated T-g(x) dependence of KNS glasses. SHG-active KNbO3 phase precipitates at later stages of crystallization when the glass starts to lose its transparency. and crystallization of perovskite-like KNbO3 is accompanied by the enhancement of SHG efficiency by several orders of magnitude. Glasses in Tb2O3-B2O3-GeO 2 (TBG) system with high, up to 33 mol% Tb2O3 content, have been obtained, and their crystallization behavior, spectral and magneto-optical properties studied. It was found that Verdet constant V of TBG glasses for wavelength 632.8 nm reached very high values: more than 0.4 arc min/cm Oe. Transparent and colorless TBG glasses with low absorption coefficient a for working wavelength 1.064 μm were prepared by varying redox conditions of melting. It provided high magneto-optical figure of merit V/a exceeding the same option of industrial glasses. The melt temperature of TBG glasses obtained did not exceed 1450 oC. This temperature is much lower than that of silicate magneto-optical glasses, promoting homogeneity of glass melt and facilitating production of TBG optical quality glasses. The observed correlation between the Verdet constant and Tb3+ content indicates that the Borrelli’s approach, explaining magneto-optical activity in glasses only by paramagnetic ion content, extends also to high concentrated rare earth oxide glasses. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. Glasses based on the K2O-Nb2O5-SiO2 system have been a subject of numerous studies thanks to promising electro-optical and non-linear optical properties. Most of the studies of Nb-containing glasses deal with compositions including not less than 40 mol% of SiO2 or B2O3. In the present work, we studied glass-forming and crystallization properties of (1 - x)KNbO3 center dot xSiO(2) glasses with x varying from 0 to 35 mol% by melt quenching between steel plates or by exposure to air or nitrogen flow. Thin transparent glassy plates can be obtained by quenching via pressing between metal plates for glasses with x >= 0.12, and transparent glass-ceramics allowing a remarkable second harmonic generation (SHG) response can be formed by heat-treatment near the first exothermic differential thermal analysis (DTA) peak over a wide range of glass compositions. It is shown that in these glasses, the crystalline K4Nb6O17 phase and a small amount of ferroelectric KNbO3, along with ceolite-like, cristobalite and alpha-quartz SiO2 phases precipitate at low temperatures in the range between the glass transition point, T-g, and the first exothermic peak on DTA curve, whereas ferroelectric KNbO3 precipitates at temperatures above 800 degrees C. Dielectric IR spectroscopy and Raman scattering (RS) spectroscopy have been used to confirm the presence in the structure of lanthanum-borogermanate (LBG) glass of triply coordinated boron atoms which are absent in a LaBGe 5 crystal. The grouping ratio [BO 3]/[BO 4] is independent of the conditions under which the glass is obtained. It is proposed that amorphous nanosize regions of two types with approximately the same chemical composition but different structure are present in the glass. Regions of the first kind contain predominately quadruply coordinated boron atoms and are the basis for the formation of nuclei of stillwellite crystals, while regions of the second kind are more disordered, and a large fraction of the boron atoms in them lie at centers of oxygen triangles. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc. This method makes it possible to nucleate and grow microcrystals with a size distribution similar to a monodisperse distribution for several fractions of a second in any glass region chosen in advance. It is demonstrated using glasses in the La2O3-B2O 3-GeO2 system as an example that the crystallization of the stillwellite-like phase LaBGeO5 with the composition close to the composition of the initial glass is observed in the glass under irradiation with the copper vapor laser operating in the high-speed pulse modulation mode. Strips (up to ∼300 μm) produced at a specified depth from the glass surface contain extended regions consisting of uniformly distributed crystals, which have almost identical sizes, exhibit a pronounced faceting, and are identified using X-ray diffraction. The size and the number of crystals can be changed over a wide range by varying laser treatment conditions. This opens up the way to the design of new glass-ceramic materials in which the location of the crystalline phase in the glass bulk is controlled by a developer. © 2009 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd. The temperature dependences of the dielectric and pyroelectric properties of the samples with La(2)Ge(2)O(7) - LaBGeO(5) - La(2)Ge(2)O(7) sandwich structure and ground samples containing only a stillwellite-like phase are studied. LNG glasses were subjected to heat treatments at temperatures in the range between T-g and temperature of the first exothermic peak in order to initiate nonlinear optical activity by nanoheterogeneity formation. Transparent nanostructured glasses with second-order optical nonlinearity were obtained for compositions characterized by the Li2O/Nb2O5 molar ratio ranging from 0.83 to 1.2 and GeO2 40-45 mol%. As prolonged heat treatments of nanostructured glasses result in crystallization of ferroelectric LiNbO3 the origin of SHG in transparent LNG glasses is supposed to be connected predominantly with polarity of nanoheterogeneities formed at the initial stage of phase separation. Second-order optical non-linearity initiated in li2o-nb2o5-sio2 and li2o-zno-nb2o5-sio2 glasses by formation of polar and centrosymmetric nano structures / V. N. Sigaev, N. V. Golubev, S. Y. Amorphous nanoheterogeneities of the size less than 100 angstrom have been formed in glasses of the Li2O-Nb2O5-SiO2 (LNS) and Li2O-ZnO-Nb2O5-SiO2 (LZNS) systems at the initial stage of phase separation and examined by transmission electron microscopy, small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering. Both LNS and LZNS nanoheterogeneous glasses exhibit second harmonic generation (SHG) even when they are characterized by fully amorphous X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns. Chemical differentiation and ordering of glass structure during heat treatments at appropriate temperatures higher T-g lead to drastic increase of SHG efficiency of LNS glasses contrary to LZNS ones in the frame of amorphous state of samples. Following heat treatments of nanostructured glasses result in crystallization of ferroelectric LiNbO3 and non-polar LiZnNbO4 in the LNS and LZNS glasses, respectively. Taking into account similar polarizability of atoms in LNS and LZNS glasses, the origin of the principal difference in the second-order optical non-linearity of amorphous LNS and LZNS samples is proposed to connect predominantly with the internal structure of formed nanoheterogeneities and with their polarity. Most probably, amorphous nanoheterogencities in glasses may be characterized with crystal-like structure of polar (LiNbO3) phase initiating remarkable SHG efficiency or non-polar (LiZnNbO4) phase, which do not initiate SHG activity. It gives an opportunity to vary SHG efficiency of glasses in a wide rage without remarkable change of their transparency by chemical differentiation process at the initial stage of phase separation when growth of nanoheterogeneities is 'frozen'. At higher temperatures, LiNbO3 crystals identified by XRD precipitate in LNS glasses initiating even more increase of SHG efficiency but visually observable transparency is impaired. Efficient 1.53 μm erbium light emission in heavily er-doped titania-modified aluminium tellurite glasses / S. Brovelli, A. Galli, R. Ti-Al co-doped erbium tellurite glasses have been obtained by melting mixed Er2O3, TiO2 and TeO2 batches in Al2O3 crucibles. By crucible dissolution Al2O3 amounts from 11.5 to 18.6 mol% were introduced in the synthesized glasses. Differential thermal analysis of glasses points to a strong dependence of glass transition temperature Tg with the substitution extent of TeO2 by the doping oxides. No crystallization features are observed up to 450 oC. The spectral features and decay kinetics of the infrared photoluminescence of erbium demonstrate the possibility to achieve more than 50% of quantum yield of light-emission at Er3+ concentrations as large as 1021 cm-3, with about 2 ms of lifetime, 8 × 10-21 cm2 of stimulated emission cross section, and no saturation at pump power densities higher than 10 kW cm-2. The study of the kinetics of Er-Er energy transfer suggests to ascribe these features to a particularly homogeneous dispersion of Er3+ ions in the modified tellurite network. Raman scattering measurements of the spectral distribution of vibrational modes evidence that the introduction of doping oxides leads to an increase of structural disorder without crystallization effects. © 2007. Favorable properties of stillwellite-like LaBGeO5 stimulated many attempts to realize them on an industrial scale. However, the growth of stillwellite single crystals is probleirtatic and, because of strong structural anisotropy, dense stillwellite ceramics were not synthesized to date. Unique properties of crystalline LaBGeO5 may be realized via bulk or grain-oriented crystallization of lanthanum borogermanate (LBG) glasses. Nucleation, bulk and surface crystallization including grain-oriented crystallization of LBG glasses are briefly reviewed. Dependence of crystallization behavior of LBG glasses on the synthesis conditions was found to be closely linked with alumina impurities that suppress texture forming but improve glass-forming ability. The latter offers an opportunity to obtain LBG-based glasses of optical quality, containing more than 30 mol% rare-earth oxides, for laser and magneto-optical applications. A wide range of active dielectrics in the LBG system covering non-linear optical nano-structures, planar wave guides and textures with excellent pyroelectric activity are expected to be developed. The methods of small angle synchrotron radiation scattering, vibration spectroscopy, and second harmonic generation are applied to glasses of the K2O-TiO2-P2O5 system near the stoichiometry of potassium titanyl-phosphate to demonstrate that at the initial stage of phase separation, while glass remains x-ray amorphous and clear, it can possess quadratic optical nonlinearity. The emergence of nonlinearity is facilitated by the formation of nanoheterogeneities in glass whose structure resembles the structural pattern of a nonlinear-optical crystal. Acorrelation established between the structural specifics of x-ray amorphous glass and its quadratic optical nonlinearly suggests the advisability of describing the short-range and medium-range orders of glasses at the glass-formation boundary in the context of quasicrystallite models. © 2006 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc. Influence of alumina addition on crystallization and texturing behavior of labgeo5 glass / V. N. Sigaev, P. Pernice, A. The structure and crystallization behavior of glasses with 25La2O3 · 25B2O3 · 50GeO2 composition, melted in platinum (P glass) and corundum (A glass) crucibles, were studied by DTA, X-ray diffraction and FTIR spectroscopy. The Al2O3 dissolved from corundum crucible in the A glass was estimated to be in the range 5-7 wt%. This alumina content had almost no influence on glass transition temperature but strongly affected the structure and crystallization behavior of the A glass. In fact, the P glass showed good texture-forming ability: high quality textured glass-ceramic plates based on stillwellite-like LaBGeO5 crystals were easily obtained. On the contrary, the presence of alumina stabilized the A glass from which binary phases crystallize first, and only afterwards they are transformed in stillwellite by secondary crystallization: so in this glass texturing is hindered. Crystallization and texturing behavior of P and A glasses were well related to FTIR data. P glass contained both threefold and fourfold coordinated boron while in the A glass the presence of aluminum forced boron to assume almost exclusively threefold co-ordination. Hence the easier crystallization of stillwellite phase and the good textures obtained from the P glass contrary to the A glass, can be well understood since all boron atoms have tetrahedral co-ordination in stillwellite LaBGeO5 crystal. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. The Raman and dielectric spectra of vitreous and single-crystal lithium heptagermanates are measured over a wide range of frequencies from 3 to 1000 cm-1. It is revealed that the spectra of the Li2O • 7GeO2 glass and the Li2Ge7O15 crystal are similar to each other because the intense but broad bands in the spectrum of the glass correspond to the most intense groups of bands in the spectrum of the crystal. The similarity is observed over the entire frequency range, including the range of the boson peak. This indicates that the shortrange orders in the structures of the glass and the crystal are similar to each other and that the medium-range order in the glass resembles the main structural motif of the crystal. © Pleiades Publishing, Inc., 2006. The Raman spectra of Li2O • 7GeO2 glasses, which are heat treated under different conditions at temperatures near the temperature corresponding to the first exothermal peak in the DTA curve, are measured in the frequency range 20-1100 cm-1. A comparative analysis of the measured spectra with the use of the data available in the literature and the X-ray diffraction results demonstrates that the glass undergoes phase separation and that phases of compositions close to GeO2 and Li 2O • 4GeO2 precipitate at the initial stage. The ordering of both phases varies significantly within the sample and, on the average, is substantially higher than that in the initial glass. This confirms the known assumptions made by researchers that crystal nuclei with a Li 2O • 4GeO2 structure arise during heat treatment of lithium germanate glasses. At the phase separation stage under investigation, the phases are formed as nanoinhomogeneities that only slightly affect the transparency and, in the course of heat treatment, increase in size with a further ordering of the structure. © Nauka/Interperiodica 2006. The paper investigates the structure and crystallization specifics of glass behaving as a precursor of a pyroelectric material with a unique combination of properties of the composition 25La2O3 • 25B 2O3 • 50GeO2 depending on the quantity of Al2O3 additive. It is established that as the alumina content grows, the crystallization of glass essentially changes: the propensity of glass to oriented surface crystallization of ferroelectric LaBGeO5 is suppressed and the share of lanthanum borate and germanate grows. The type of crystallization of glass correlates with IR spectroscopy data, indicating that modifications of the glass structure caused by increasing Al 2O3 content lead to substantial changes in the BO 3: BO4 ratio. © 2006 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc. Low frequency dynamics of glasses and crystals of similar composition / V. N. Sigaev, S. V. Lotarev, E. N. Wide range (10-1500 cm-1) dielectric and Raman spectra of crystals and glasses of similar compositions were analysed with the use of both literature (α-quartz, cristobalite, LaBGeO5, Pb 5Ge3O11, As2Se3, etc.) and original (Li2Ge7O15, LiBaPO4) data. For all structural types (island, chain, layer or frame like), the boson peak (BP) in the glass spectrum (GS) corresponds to one or several bands in the low frequency (LF) spectrum of the corresponding crystal. In this sense, the LF range (<200 cm-1) is not a specific feature of GS as compared to higher frequency range of stretching and bending modes, where the crystal spectral bands are widened due to disordering and/or vitrification up to their full conversion into a diffuse GS. Therefore the origin of LF bands in GS can be identified taking into account the nature of corresponding bonds in the crystal spectrum by analogy with well known procedure of interpretation of stretching and bending vibrations in GS. The approach proposed is exemplified by different systems. Lead germanate glasses reveal several highly overlapping LF peaks, which originate from optical vibrations of lead atoms by analogy with Pb 5Ge3O11 crystal spectrum. The Li 2Ge7O15 glass and crystal LFpeaks correspond to vibrations of oxygen in layer fragments of the structure. Cristobalite-like structure of silica glass is proposed on the assumption of coincidence of peak frequencies in their Raman spectra at ∼50 cm-1, whereas α-quartz has no vibrational modes below 100 cm-1. Thus, the approach proposed allows one to refine and concretise the universal nature of the BP, referring to the short and medium range structure and the vibrational properties of the corresponding crystal.

In spite of the interest in nonlinear optical (NLO) properties in glasses, the composite method has been succeessful only for the beta-BaB2O4 Polar Crystal incorporated in the borosilicate glass matri.y. In the present paper, transparent composites based on low melting borate and boron silicate glasses containing PbO or TeO2 and KNbSi2O7 ferroelectric crystal are obtained by a remelting technology. Depending on glass composition, NLO composites are subdivided in two types. The first are composites containing micron or submicron sealed crystals with a high second harmonic generation (SHG) activity, where refractive indexes of crystals and glass matrix are very similar Such a type of transparent composites is expected to achieve SHG activity in the future comparable with that of single crystals. The second type are 'nanocoinposites' where initial crystals are dissolved or transformed up to nanoscaled sizes. They are considered to be an analogue of nanostructured glasses exhibiting moderate second order optical nonlinearity.

Small crystais of novel halogen-borate, Pb2B5O9Br demonstrate nonlinear optical activity comparable with that of LiNbO3 and KTiOPO4. The crystals are characterized by second-order nonlinear coefficients as high as 3.0 +/- 0.5 pm/V, phase-matchable for YAG:Nd laser and its second harmonic radiations. Polar properties of Pb2B5O9Br together with its good glass-forming ability and some peculiarities of glass crystallization make promising the development of nonlinear materials on its base as single crystals, nanostructured glasses, and glass-ceramics. The origin of nanostructuring in potassium niobiosilicate glasses by raman and ftir spectroscopy / A. Aronne, V. N. Sigaev, B. The structure of potassium niobium silicate glasses in a wide compositional range has been studied by means of Raman and FTIR spectroscopy. The glasses spectra were compared to those of the KNbSi2O7 and K 3Nb3O6Si2O7 polycrystalline samples, obtained by crystallization of glasses of the same composition. It was found that the structure of such glasses is formed by SiO4 tetrahedra and distorted NbO6 octahedra. The amount of highly distorted (edge-sharing, non-bridging oxygens) octahedra results essentially unchanged from the glass composition. By contrast, the fraction of octahedra with a lower distortion degree (corner-sharing, bridging oxygens) increases with the Nb2O5 content. Raman and FTIR investigations indicate that during long heat treatments at temperatures near Tg, in the 23K2O • 27Nb2O5 • 50SiO2 glass, a structural change occurs regarding the amorphous matrix with a decrease of the niobium octahedra distortion. This can be related to a segregation process producing niobium rich regions nanometric in size. In the first heat treatment (2 h) the glass remains amorphous while for more prolonged heat treatments, nanocrystals of an unidentified phase are formed. Transparent glass composites containing nonlinear optical (NLO) and luminescent crystals are of significant interest for the optical materials science in spite of a lot of difficulties to synthesize high-quality NLO composites: refractive index and density matching of glass matrix and crystal, controlled chemical interaction between them, absence of crystal aggregation, cords, bubbles, etc. Low density and refractive index, high second harmonic generation (SHG) activity, rather a high melting point allow to refer KNbSi2O7 ferroelectric to a promising candidate for using in the NLO glass composite technology. Manifestation of NLO properties of crystals in glass composites is established to depend drastically on glass matrix composition. During re-melting lead containing glasses react chemically with KNbSi2O7 forming pyrochlore Pb2Nb2O7 which is dissolved gradually up to nano-scaled state exhibiting moderate SHG efficiency by analogy with nanostructured glasses because of space modulation of polarizability originated from nano-sized inhomogeneities enriched with Pb and Nb. Using of TeO2-based glasses permits to match refractive indexes of glass matrix and crystal, reduce glass melting temperature and fabricate transparent composites containing micron and sub-micron crystals with high second harmonic generation activity. However such an attempt has been carried out only for LaBSiO5 stillwellite doped with Pb(Ca)BPO5. Taking into account the higher pyroelectric activity of LaBGeO5 as compared to LaBSiO5, in the present work existence of solid solutions in the LaBGeO5-LaBSiO5 and LaBGeO5-Pb(Ca)BPO5 systems was explored and Tc composition dependency was determined. It can be supposed that compositions in the range LaBGe0.2-0.4Si0.8-0.6O5 are good candidates to develop new high-effective pyroelectrics in form of ceramics, composites or textures. Nano-phased crystallisation of ferroelectrics from glasses in the k2o-tio2-p2o5 and k2o-nb2o5-sio2 systems / V. N. Sigaev, P. Pernice, A. Crystallisation behaviour of glasses in the (KO)-O-2-TiO2-P2O5 (KTP) has been studied by DTA, XRD, EM and SHG techniques to isolate composition ranges where bulk precipitation of ferroelectric phase KTiOPO4 occurs. It was found that bulk crystallisation of KTiOPO4 at temperatures slightly exceeding T-g is initiated by addition of SiO2. Controlled heat treatment leads to formation of optically non-linear KTiOPO4 nano-particles in KTP glasses (like amorphous nanostructuring in KNS glasses) in initial stages of phase separation and produces nanoscaled modulation of polarisability and SHG effect. Non-isothermal crystallization and nanostructuring in potassium niobium silicate glasses / A. Aronne, V. N. Sigaev, P. Potassium niobium silicate (KNS) glasses the composition of which is characterized by the K2O/Nb2O5 molar ratio ranging from 0.85 to 1.2 and SiO2 50-54 mol% were examined in order to clarify the influence of chemical composition on formation of transparent nanostructured state of glasses. Differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy were used to study the non-isothermal crystallization of the KNS glasses as well as their morphological features. It was found that all glasses devitrify in three steps forming unidentified phases at the first two ones while at higher temperature (1000-1100 oC) the crystallization of K3Nb3O6Si 2O7 takes place. For prolonged heat treatment time (more than 5 h) at high temperature (1050-1100 oC) the transformation of this phase into the KNbSi2O7 ferroelectric one occurs in some extent. Nanostructuring occurs at the first stage of the devitrification process. It results from two partially overlapped processes: amorphous phase separation and subsequent crystallization. It was shown that only for the glass with the K2O/Nb2O5 molar ratio equal to 0.85 and SiO2 50 mol% it is possible to separate the above processes by isothermal heat treatments at 680 oC obtaining fully transparent nanostructured samples. Structure and crystallization of potassium titanium phosphate glasses containing b2o3 and sio2 / A. Aronne, L. E. Depero, V. N. Transparent glasses composition of which can be expressed by the formula: (100-x)·(K2O·2TiO2·P2O 5)·x(K2O·2B2O3· 7SiO2), where x=5, 10, 15 and 20 mol% (KTP-xKBS), were obtained by melt quenching technique. The structure and crystallization behavior of these glasses have been examined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential thermal analysis and X-ray diffraction. In spite of their nominal composition, the studied glasses exhibit a similar oxygen polyhedra distribution. However, significant differences were found in the trigonal BO3 units amount. During DTA runs all the examined glasses devitrify in two steps. In the former, very small crystals of an unknown crystalline phase are produced. In KTP-5KBS and KTP-10KBS glasses anatase phase was also detected. Attempts were made in order to identify the unknown phase (UTP) for which a AB3(XO4)2(OH)6 Crandallite-type structure was proposed where the A, B and X sites were occupied by K, Ti and/or Al, and P, respectively. In the second devitrification step the crystallization of the KTiOPO4 phase occurs while the UTP phase previously formed disappears. Isothermal heat treatments performed at temperature just above Tg have allowed one to obtain transparent crystal-glass nanocomposites, formed by crystalline nanostructure of the UTP phase uniformly dispersed in the amorphous matrix. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. Amorphous nanostructuring in potassium niobium silicate glasses by sans and shg: a new mechanism for second-order optical non-linearity of glasses / V. N. Sigaev, S. Y. Stefanovich, B. Potassium niobium silicate (KNS) glasses xK(2)OxNb(2)O(5)(1 - 2x)SiO2 with x = 0.167; 0.182; 0.200; 0.220 and 0.250 have been subjected to prolonged heat treatments in a wide temperature range above T, As a result, glasses exhibiting liquid-type phase separation phenomena have been isolated. Moreover for each glass composition, the temperature zones have been determined to produce transparent, opalescent or opaque materials which have been studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and second harmonic generation (SHG) techniques. SANS data unambiguously point at nanostructuring of KNS glasses in the scale of 5-20 nm under appropriate heat treatments near T-g. In contrast to initial KNS glasses, nanostructured glasses exhibit SHG activity. For earliest stages of phase separation SHG-active glasses are characterized by fully amorphous XRD patterns. Further development of phase separation in glasses with increasing of their opalescence leads to diminishing SHG, and subsequently partial crystallization takes place giving opaque materials. Since relative maximum of SHG efficiency corresponds to non-crystalline nanostructured glasses, such new transparent second-order non-linear media may be of both scientific and practical interest. With regard to non-crystalline structure of nano-inhomogeneities, SHG mechanism in the glasses is supposed to be due to a combination of third-order non-linearity with a spatial modulation of linear polarizability. Glass formation in the K2O-TiO2-P2O5-SiO2 system, and the structure and crystallization behavior of glasses having compositions near the stoichiometry of KTiOPO4 (KTP) have been examined by differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), fast Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and second harmonic generation (SHG). Pure glasses may be obtained adding an appropriate amount of P2O5 as well as of SiO2 to the KTP composition. Transparent and homogeneous glasses were synthesized for the 56(K2O (.) 2TiO(2) (.) P2O5) (.) 44P(2)O(5) (KTP-44P) and the 90(K2O (.) 2TiO(2) (.) P2O5) (.) 10SiO(2) (KTP-10Si) molar compositions. In contrast, for the 80(K2O (.) 2TiO(2) (.) P2O5) (.) 20SiO(2) (KTP-20Si) and for higher SiO2 contents, the obtained glasses were partially opaque and phase separated. KTP glasses with lower P2O5 content cannot be obtained as they crystallize during quenching. The KTP-10Si glass shows the only exothermic peak connected to KTP phase crystallization whereas the KTP-44P and the KTP-20Si glasses devitrify in two steps. Firstly the same unidentified phase is formed in both these glasses and the KTP phase is formed only at higher temperatures. Transparent and opalescent KTP glasses exhibiting SHG activity may be produced by careful heat treatments at temperatures just above T-g. The origin of SHG in transparent glasses is supposed to be connected with either precipitation of KTiOPO4 nanocrystallites or very early stages of liquid-type phase separation. Lead germanate glasses of the xPbO(1-x)GeO2 compositions with x ranging from 0.200 to 0.625 have been synthesized and their crystallization behaviour and vibrational properties studied by differential thermal analysis (DTA) and Raman spectroscopy. Raman spectra of the Pb5Ge3O11 ceramics also have been measured and compared to lead germanate glass spectra and literature data on β-PbO. Ge atoms in low lead glasses are supposed to be surrounded by four to six oxygen atoms, while the high-lead glass (x = 0.625) corresponding to stoichiometry of the Pb5Ge3O11 ferroelectrics contains predominantly fourfold coordinated germanium. Structural resemblence of high-lead germanate glasses to the Pb5Ge3O11 crystal is proposed rather than to β-PbO. The ‘boson’ peak range in the spectra of lead germanate glasses is discussed taking into account the similarities of the spectra of glassy and crystalline Pb5Ge3O11. [ DOI ]

Synthesis of ferroelectric materials by glass crystallisation is attractive to produce both high-quality textures and composites. In the present work, composites based on ferroelectric stillwellite-like LaBSiO5 and glasses having compositions near to compounds Pb5Ge3O11, PbLiPO4 and PbBPO5 were synthesised and their dielectric and pyroelectric properties examined. A pyroelectric coefficient of about 0.5 nC/cm(2) K may be obtained by liquid-phase sintering of pellets. Crystallization behavior of potassium niobium silicate (KNS) glasses having compositions expressed by the general formula xK(2)O . xNb(2)O(5).(1-2x)SiO2, with x = 0.167, 0.182, 0.200, 0.220, and 0.250, has been studied by DTA, X-ray diffraction, second harmonic optical generation (SHG), and electron microscopy. Bulk crystallization of potassium niobates in glasses with compositions near K2O . Nb2O5. 2SiO(2), as well as surface crystallization of KNbSi2O7 phase, has been established. Transparent glass-ceramics, based on potassium niobates with remarkable SHG signal values, can be obtained from glasses with the lowest silica content, by heat treatment at temperatures just above T-g, while at higher temperatures from all of the glasses under investigation the main crystallizing phase is KNbSi2O7 ferroelectric. Applying a dc electric field, grain-oriented crystallization is produced in KNS glasses with development of significantly anisotropic arrangements of KNbSi2O7 crystallites.

The possibility to produce polar phases from glass has been examined for ternary oxide systems of the stillwellite family (trigonal LnBXO(5), where Ln=La,Ce,Pr,Sm; X=Si,Ge and RBPO5, where R=Ca,Sr,Ba,Pbl, tetragonal K-2(NbO)(2)Si4O12 and orthorhombic PbLiPO4. Both original and literature data on crystallization behaviour of glasses in the Ln(2)O(3)-B2O3-XO2, RO-B2O3-P2O5, K2O-Nb2O5-SiO2, and Li2O-PbO-P2O5 systems are reviewed. The anisotropy in properties and morphology of polar crystals is considered as the main reason of grain-oriented crystallisation of glasses. Three new types of ferroelectric glass ceramic textures in the systems mentioned are reported and their specific features are described. [ DOI ]
Low-frequency band at 50 cm-1 in the raman spectrum of cristobalite: identification of similar structural motifs in glasses and crystals of similar composition / V. N. Sigaev, E. N. Smelyanskaya, V. Raman spectra of high-temperature α-cristobalite ceramics and silica glass have been obtained in a wide frequency range from 10 to 1500 cm-1. A low-frequency maximum at 50 cm-1 in the spectrum of cristobalite has been observed to be similar to the well-known band at 52 cm-1 in the Raman spectra of silica glasses. The combination of literature reports on inelastic neutron scattering, low-temperature heat capacity, X-ray and neutron scattering in the region of the first sharp diffraction peak (FSDP) and our data on Raman and far IR spectroscopies indicate a cristobalite-like medium-range order in silica glasses. The comparison of the obtained spectra with the Raman spectrum of α-quartz, as well as the comparison of far IR spectra of some multicomponent glasses with the ones of corresponding crystals, demonstrates that by means of low-frequency spectroscopic data it is possible to identify the crystalline polymorphs reflected by the glass. The structure and the devitrification behavior of barium aluminoborate glasses, examined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential thermal analysis and X-ray diffraction are reported. The glass compositions are expressed by the general formula: (50-x/2)BaO·(50-x/2)B2O3·xAl2O3 with x = 2, 4 and 8. All the as-quenched glasses were phase separated. Aluminum acting as glass former gives a more polymerized structure increasing the glass stability with respect to the devitrification process. Surface crystallization was found to be dominant for all glasses, forming βBaB2O4 nanocrystals as the main crystalline phase. [ DOI ]

Under appropriate conditions (high temperature gradient, rapid heating and following prolonged isothermal treatment, suppression of bulk crystallization, polished glass surface, etc.) the La2O3-B2O3-XO2 (X = Si, Ge) systems glasses are crystallized in preference on the surface with formation of perfect textures based on needle-shaped stillwellite-like crystals of the LaBXO5 composition. Lanthanum borogermanate (LBG) glasses exhibit more intense texture-forming ability than lanthanum borosilicate (LBS) ones. Glass ceramic textures with a degree of grain orientation up to 0.9 in the LBG system are obtained. The pyroelectric coefficient values of the best of synthesized LEG textures are as high as 0.5-1.5 nC cm(-2) K-1 in a wide temperature range. A poor crystallization ability of the LBS glasses at temperatures less than 1000 degrees C supposed to be used in preparing both thin polar crystalline films on the glass surface for nonlinear optical applications and ferroelectric (pyroelectric) glass ceramics by the powder technology. It is experimentally shown that glass-ceramic textures based on the LaBGeO5 stillwellite-like phase can be manufactured by techniques of isothermal crystallization, gradient crystallization of glass plates or small glass bars, and crystallization of glass plates under the conditions of their axial compression. The effect of the quality of glass surface and heating rate on the texture formation is studied under isothermal conditions. The dense glass-ceramic textures with degree of grain orientation up to 0.8 are obtained. Electron microscopy makes it possible to clearly observe the texture in the form of well-defined needle-shaped LaBGeO5 crystals, which grow, for the most part, normally to the glass surface. The temperature dependences of the permittivity for samples cut in parallel and perpendicular to the surface are measured. These dependences confirm the high degree of sample texturing and provide a way of revealing the ferroelectric phase transition along the polar axis at 515 degrees C, which is close to the temperature of such a transition in the LaBGeO5 single crystal. The pyroelectric coefficient for the best textures obtained is about 0.5-1.5 nC/(cm(2) K) over a wide range of temperatures. There are considerable potentials of increasing this coefficient through both the optimization of composition, glass melting, and glass-making and the texturing process.

Ten glasses close in composition to the stoichiometry of the LaBSiO5 stillwellite-like phase are synthesized, and the specific features of glass synthesis are discussed. The glass properties (density, thermal expansion, T-g, permittivity and dielectric loss at a frequency of 1 MHz, and volume de resistance) are measured, and the crystallization of glasses is studied. The crystallization field of the LaBSiO5 stillwellite is constructed. A narrow region of compositions and heat treatment conditions are determined at which the glass-ceramic samples with ferroelectric properties can be obtained. These samples are characterized by a step change in the temperature curve of the optical second harmonic signal I-2 omega in the temperature range 120-140 degrees C. The appreciable value of dl(2 omega)(T)/dT suggests that the LaBSiO5-based glass-ceramic materials possess both ferroelectric and pyroelectric properties.

The non-isothermal crystallization of lanthanum borogermanate glasses, of stoichiometry LaBGeO5 has been studied by differential thermal analysis. The phase that crystallizes during the DTA runs was identified by X-ray diffraction as the stillwellite-like LaBGeO5. In the glasses studied, crystallization from surface nuclei was found to be dominant. The activation energy of crystal growth, evaluated from DTA curves, was about 465 kJ mol-1. [ DOI ]

Exotherms on differential thermal analysis curves for lanthanum borogermanate glasses are interpretated by using the X-ray diffraction and the second harmonic generation method data. It is shown that acentric nuclei of the stillwellite phase are formed at the early stages of crystallization. There is not any metastable phase, prior to stillwellite precipitation. Glass-ceramic samples with high stillwellite content were synthesized, and their properties were measured and compared with the properties of a single crystal of LaBGeO5. [ DOI ]
